2017 Q1 Report

Diablo 3 - Season 9
In my last post, I mentioned how refreshing it was to start from scratch with a brand new character in D3. I rolled a Crusader for season 9 hoping to repeat some of that fun. It was a little less enjoyable this time around mainly because of the Crusader's playstyle. I went for a thorns-invoker build which stresses getting hit as part of the strategy. It wasn't nearly as fun as running around as a chicken last season. 7/10

Euro Truck Simulator 2
Yes, the game where you deliver cargo in a big rig from one European city to another. Why did I buy this game? I don't really remember (maybe a Humble Bundle?). Why did I play this? I don't really know. Did I enjoy it? Yeah, kinda.

ARMA 2 / ARMA 3
This series is a "military simulation" and NOT an FPS. I tried to play it like an FPS and was punished severely. It is an unforgiving game. If the enemy shoots you a couple of times, you die. Most times, I didn't even see where the shots came from. Just watch the screen go red and then fall down.

Aliens: Colonial Marines
Aliens is one of my all-time favorite movies. Great characters, plot, acting, and action. It's one of the greatest movie sequels ever made. The sequel to that movie, Alien3, was a complete letdown. Everything that made Aliens great was tossed aside in Alien3. So how does this game fit in? Surprisingly, the game is considered canon and takes place just after Aliens. It actually retcons a TON of stuff that happened in A3. Example, at the end of Aliens, the colony gets vaporized by a nuclear explosion. In the game, the damage isn't that bad. It's like the same colony from the movie, just more run down. The worst retcon of the game is resurrecting a character that died in the movie. The in-game dialogue explaining this shocking development, "it's a long story". WTF. No. No. No. What kind of lazy-ass writing is this? It shows complete disrespect for the source material and audience.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Steam says I put 17 hrs into this game previously, but I don't really remember it at all. As I was playing through (again?) I had some hazy flashbacks.

Civilization 5
Waaaaaay back in the day, Civilization 2 was probably the first game I got "addicted" too. Just one more turn. Every Civ gamer knows that feeling.

Homefront
Wow, what a short game. I finished in around 3 sessions (4hrs according to Steam).

FEAR 2
- supposed to be scary like the first game
- totally not scary. not enough monsters/ghosts
- pacing was bizarre. much of the game is trying to escape a boring office bldg. Then there's a mech stage???

Hearthstone
- avoided this game for the longest time due to WoW burnout
- well crafted game
